- That's the way they design 'em. Narrow tracks and low tape speed make
- it so. I work for the FAA, and we use the same thing to record all the
- conversations between the control towers and the airplanes.
-
- The FAA recently awarded a contract for a new "Digital Voice Recorder"
- system that I had nothing to do with (I buy landing systems), but I read
- some things about it. I was looking for them to buy an off-the-shelf
- DAT-based system from Eventide since there was a lot of fluff at the
- time about saving money with off-the-shelf purchases, but they ended up
- with a fairly complex system from an Israeli company. It's a whole
- system with pretty sophisticated switching on the front ent, so it
- needed to come from an integrator, not just a recorder manufacturer.
- Anyway, the bottom line is that there are better recorders than the
- Dictaphone available now. You probaby don't have the budget for
- wholesale replacement, but it's something to think about for the future.

- There are some hiss-reduction techniques that work pretty well - DINR
- for ProTools and a similar algorithm that's available with Sound Forge
- are two that come to mind. You can't put back high frequencies that
- were never recorded, however.
